Check Chrome updates without downloading a mystery installer

Use the browser’s own update path and finish with a restart.

To check a desktop Chrome installation, open the three-dot menu and look for Help, then About Google Chrome. The browser checks its update status there. Follow any update and relaunch prompts it displays. Google explains that available updates may not finish applying until Chrome is closed and reopened. Menu wording and update handling can differ by operating system or managed-device policy.

Before relaunching, finish unsaved work in web forms and documents. Restoring a tab is not a promise that every unfinished form will survive. If you are in a video call or working in an application that is sensitive to interruption, choose a sensible moment to restart rather than dismissing the update indefinitely.

Our recommended check has a clear end point: return to the About page after restarting and read the status again. If an error remains, copy its wording or take a screenshot. Record your operating system and whether the computer belongs to an organisation. Those details are useful when following the official troubleshooting link.

Use the update mechanism or the official Chrome website. A random webpage claiming that your browser is dangerously out of date is not evidence about your installed version. If an organisation manages the browser, contact its support team when policy prevents an update. Repeatedly installing unrelated “update helpers” makes the original problem harder to diagnose.
